How to overcoat mineral oils such as Cutek™ CD50 with Intergrain® UltraDeck®

Cutek™ CD50 is marketed as a penetrating oil that diffuses deeply into timber. It uses a non‑drying mineral oil system that initially penetrates the timber and may continue to migrate within the wood over time. As a result, residual mineral oil can migrate back to the timber surface, which may cause adhesion or performance issues when applying subsequent coating systems.

Even where timber appears dry and weathered, it may still contain residual Cutek™ CD50 oil. For this reason, careful surface preparation is essential before coating over timber previously treated with Cutek™ CD50.

Note: This preparation method is intended for exterior timber only.

Surface Preparation

  1. Wash the timber thoroughly using Intergrain UltraPrep™ Tannin & Oil Remover, following all label instructions.
  2. Clean and neutralise the surface with Intergrain UltraPrep™ Timber Cleaner, following all label instructions.
  3. Rinse thoroughly and allow the timber to dry completely.
  4. Conduct a water absorption test:
    • Water should readily soak into the timber surface.
    • If water beads on the surface, further cleaning is required before coating.

This preparation process is critical, as it may assist in removing residual Cutek™ CD50 from the timber surface. However, due to the penetrating and non‑drying nature of mineral oils, complete removal of Cutek™ CD50 cannot be guaranteed.

Before Coating
Once the above surface preparation is complete:

  • Ensure the timber is fully dry before coating.
  • Confirm the surface has been correctly prepared using appropriate Intergrain UltraPrep™ cleaning products, in accordance with label instructions.

Application
After preparation, apply either:

Follow all label instructions for application, coverage, recoating times, and environmental conditions.
