I have a coating that is taking a long time to dry

A coating taking longer to dry may be caused by:

  1. Cold or humid weather conditions.
  2. Excessive film thickness.
  3. Application over a previous coat or product that is insufficiently cured.
  4. Application over grease, wax or grime left by insufficient preparation.
  5. Application to oily timbers that have not been thoroughly de-oiled by the use of timber cleaner or solvent wipe. Some timbers such as cypress, spotted gum, Tallowwood, brushbox and teak are naturally oily.

For 1, 2 & 3, the best option is to allow the coating to dry further. Eventually, they will dry. For 4 , the coating may eventually dry, but may not achieve its proper adhesion or hardness. Hence the best option is to remove the coating entirely, prepare the surface correctly and start again. For 5, the coating may eventually dry, but may remain slightly soft. Application of one further coat may help regain full hardness.
