I have a finish where the colour is uneven and patchy in areas
The uneven colour may be caused by:
- Uneven porosity of the timber.
- Application technique.
More porous areas of the timber will absorb stain more readily and hence will be darker, while denser areas absorb less stain and hence will be lighter. A consistent application technique needs to be used to ensure the most even finish possible - for example leaving the stain for the same amount of time before removing the excess. Application of another coat may help to even out the colour. If not, then remove the stain by sanding or stripping. If staining porous timbers like pine, applying a sealer first before staining can help even out the porosity and make staining easier.
