I have a milky or cloudy appearance in my finish

The milky or cloudy appearance may be caused by:

  • Application or drying in cold or humid conditions.
  • The coating getting wet not long after application.

The milkiness disappears when the water dries off. Known as "Water Whitening". Some timber species such as Jarrah may contain natural chemicals that may cause a coating to become milky and remain milky. If this happens, the problem is usually isolated to one or two boards. The milkiness will normally disappear or stop appearing as the coating cures. So the best option is to simply allow the coating to dry further. If the milkiness was due to a chemical reaction (for example with Jarrah), then the coating needs to be removed back to bare timber, and a solvent based sealer used before top coating.
